Word of the Day – June 30th, 2008

Baleful
adj.
Deadly or insidious in influence [as in a baleful effect]; threatening evil [as in a baleful look]
I always believed this word should mean “sad” or “morose.” Not that there’s anything wrong with the meaning as is, but “baleful” always felt like a more passive word rather than an aggressive one.

Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama spoke today from the symbolic town of Independence, Missouri as he sought to reassure voters of his strong and profound commitment to his country.  This follows an event last Friday with Senator Hillary Clinton in the symbolic town of Unity, New Hampshire where he spoke of the need for all [...]

Epigone
noun.
An inferior imitator, particularly of a writer, musician, or artist.
This word has an interesting derivation. Originally it came from the Greek word “Epigoni” which means “progeny” or “offspring.” There is an early Greek epic called Epigoni that tells the story of the Second Theban War between Thebes and the Greek city-state of Argos. This Second [...]

BREAKING NEWS: Obama and Clinton Meet in Unity for Unity Rally

Today in Unity, New Hampshire, former Democratic rivals Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton met before a crowd of approximately 6,000 to reaffirm their shared commitment to putting Obama in the White House. Beyond the manifest symbolism of having a “Unity Rally” in Unity, New Hampshire, the town was chosen because Unity had split its vote [...]

What Is Important?

I started an internship last week at a fairly huge company based here in Seattle. This break from my all-too-short grad program has set my mind aflutter about what the rest of my life is going to look like. I decided to go back to school in part because I spent my 20s in a [...]

Obscure Sports Love II

I will repeat this from the previous post in case anyone misses it there:
I’m a sports fan, but I’m not only a fan of football, baseball, basketball, and hockey. Over the past few years, I have gotten really into two sports that are a bit more obscure: soccer and horse-racing. I talked about soccer this [...]

Obscure Sports Love

I’m a sports fan, but I’m not only a fan of football, baseball, basketball, and hockey. Over the past few years, I have gotten really into two sports that are a bit more obscure: soccer and horse-racing. Let’s talk about soccer this morning and horse-racing this afternoon. In the mean time, leave comments and tell [...]

Douchebaggery
noun
The act of behaving like a douchebag.
That’s right; it’s a self-referential definition. I’m the guest blogger. I can do what I want!

Save Some for the Rest of Us!

First off, thanks to willminus for the ringing endorsement. Now I’m motivated to succeed!
I am a Philadelphia sports fan. Therefore, I currently hate the city of Boston. Or, more to the point, I hate anyone who roots for Boston sports teams. I lived in Boston when this embarrassment of riches began in 2002. I even [...]
