According to Marc Spears at Boston.com, “As of 4 p.m. EDT today, the Celtics plane is still on the ground in Los Angeles due to mechanical issues with the plane.”
Sound familiar? Well, after the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Charlotte Hornets in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals, their plane had mechanical problems as well. And since the team couldn’t find any available hotel rooms in the city, the players ended up have to sleep fitfully on their plane overnight.
Despite having to play game 1 of the Western Conference finals the very next day, the Spurs jumped out to to a 20 point lead and were well-positioned to steal a game from the Lakers in Los Angeles. Not surprisingly, after their ordeal, they ran out of gas in the 4th quarter and the Lakers came from behind to win 89-85. The Spurs never recovered and lost the series 4 games to 1.
Now the airplane of another opponent of the Los Angeles Lakers is having mechanical difficulties which may cause them to get into Boston significantly later than they had planned, thereby effecting the rest necessary for the important game 6. Coincidence, I imagine, but perhaps it’s worth figuring out whether or not David Stern has any airplane mechanics on the NBA payroll?
